The K53 driving test strikes fear into the hearts of all prospective learner drivers, given its fearsome reputation and the statistics that suggest the majority fail it the first time.

The idea behind the test is to measure the capability of the learner-driver around handling a vehicle, obeying traffic rules and coping with practical problems on the road. However, the complexity of the test is what makes many learner drivers so nervous.

Proper preparation for taking a K53 test comes with getting the learner’s license portion correct first of all.

With today's economy, not so many people can afford to purchase the K53 Learners book and we have decided to give it away for free to everyone who needs it.

The learner's licence test

What is a learner's licence?

Before you may take driving lessons on a public road, you need to prove to the authorities that you know and understand some basic things about driving and about road law. The learner's licence test is the means by which you can prove this. When you pass this test you will qualify for a learner's licence to show that you are permitted to drive on a public road, provided you are accompanied by a suitably qualified and licenced driver.

To pass the learner's licence test you will need to:

  • know all the rules of the road;
  • understand the basics of the K53 defensive driving system;
  • know what the various vehicle controls controls (steering wheel, gears, footbrake, etc.) are used for; and
  • know the meanings of the road traffic signs, signals and painted road markings, and how the driver should respond to each of them.
What will the learner's licence authorise me to do?

  • You may drive on public roads (including freeways), provided you are accompanied by someone who holds a valid driver's licence for the class of vehicle you are driving, and who is seated next to you or, if that is not possible, then directly behind you.
  • You may carry passengers in a motor vehicle provided they do not pay a fare.
Note: A learner motorcycle driver may not carry a passenger (not even the driving instructor). You are therefore permitted to ride unaccompanied.

What  Are  The  Requirements

A learners licence is a driving permit that allows you to drive a vehicle on a public road under the supervision of a licenced driver. There are different categories of learner licences you can apply for; these are for motor cycles, motor cars and heavy goods vehicles.

  • You must be 16 years or older to apply to ride a motorcycle with a 125cc (or less) engine and a light motor vehicle (less than 3500kg)
  • You need to be 17 years or older to apply to ride a motorcycle with an engine over 125cc
  • You need to be 18 years or older to apply for all other motor vehicles (more than 3500kg)

You will need to present the following documents when applying for a learners licence:

  • Identity card or passport
  • 2 Recent passport size photographs (colour or black and white)
  • Pass the eye exam conducted at the testing centre.
  • You will need to fill in the Learners Licence Form (LL1) and pay the booking fee when applying for the learners licence. Once you pass, you will have to pay the issue fee to get your learners licence.

The fees are not the same and differ from province to province in South Africa.

What  can  disqualify me?

  • If you are suffering from a medical condition such as epilepsy, defective vision or diabetes
  • You have been disqualified by a court of law from driving any motor vehicle and the court order is still in force
  • If your licence has been cancelled or suspended and the order is still in force
  • If you already are in possession of the same category of driving licence already issued in South Africa
